Fantasy Board Game League 2017 – Week 1 – Vs. BJ from Board Game Gumbo

This year I’m participating in the second annual Fantasy Board Game League put up by Jake and Danielle from the Draft Mechanic podcast (although Danielle does 97% of the work).

Last year I took the Duke-a-Doodle-Doos all the way, and was the league champ, thanks in large part to my first round draft pick Scythe!

This year the DaDDs are returning, but as the Duke-a-Doodle-Deuce (‘cuz it’s the second year – get it? “Clever” word play). And I’ll be honest, as the reigning champ, I feel like there’s some pressure on me!

Earlier today (9/10/11) I sat down with the aforementioned Jake and Danielle, Brandon and Patrick from the What Did You Play This Week Podcast Thing?, BJ from Board Game Gumbo, Crystal from Board Game Blitz, Bill from the Cubist podcast, Quinten from the Boards Alive podcast and Adrian from the Mile High Game Guys.

This year I was 9th pick instead of first and I took Arkham Horror: The Card Game as my first round pick. AH:TCG was a solid performer on the DaDDs last year, that spent a considerable time on my bench, because I wasn’t paying enough attention, because the DaDDs were steamrolling the competition (did I mention I had Scythe?). This year, I expect things to be a bit tighter, and I anticipate some really touch matches.

Overall, I’m happy with the team I put together… here is the 2017 Duke-a-Doodle-Deuce:

  • Gateway: 7 Wonders: Duel
  • Abstract: Go
  • Euro: Castles of Burgundy
  • Card: Arkham Horror TCG
  • Heavy: Lisboa
  • 7 Wonders
  • Star Wars Rebellion
  • Takenoko
  • Champions of Midgard
  • T.I.M.E. Stories
  • Bench: Codenames: Disney
  • Bench: Codenames: Marvel
  • Bench: Legend of the Five Rings (FFG)

I am really excited to see what my bench does once the games release/become more widely available. My specific position games are really solid – with Lisboa possible being the weakest – but should still perform well. 7 Wonders, SW Rebellion and T.I.M.E Stories should all be solid performing generalists. I’ll be keeping a close on on Champions of Midgard and Takenoko.

Players will receive points based on the number of logged plays on BGG, change to the BGG rankings, and by public voting.

Week 1 – “Roux Dat” – BJ from Board Game Gumbo

This first week I’m facing BJ from Board Game Gumbo. He’s bringing the following:

  • Card: Star Wars: Destiny
  • Heavy: The Colonists
  • Clank!: A Deck-Building Adventure
  • Gloomhaven
  • Pandemic Legacy: Season 1
  • Ticket to Ride: Europe
  • Port Royal
